Guest Blog- LGBT Life at Tulane

Another guest blog for you today; take it away team LGBT!

Hello everybody! My name is Patrick Wroe, and last year I wrote a blog about LGBTQ life at Tulane. Having prospective and admitted students reach out to me to ask about queer life on campus has been a huge honor. However, since I am graduating soon, I’m turning the reigns over to these two awesome people! They’re going to talk about their experiences at Tulane, and would be more than happy to answer any questions or concerns about coming to Tulane.

Name: Will Dickson
Major: Latin & Biochemistry (Pre-Med)
Year: Sophomore
Email: wdickson@tulane.edu

Hey y’all! My name is Will Dickson, a sophomore from Memphis, Tennessee studying Latin and Cell Biology. On campus, I’m a member of the Tulane Honor Board, which deals with cases of academic misconduct, and I’m heavily involved with Green Wave Ambassadors. GWA allows me to show off how amazing Tulane is to prospective students and their families. This summer I’ll also have the incredible opportunity to work with future Tulane students as an Orientation Team Leader (OTL). My job will be to show the incoming freshman class around campus and New Orleans, and help them adjust to university life. I can remember as an incoming freshman my greatest fear was that just like in high school, I wouldn’t be accepted for who I am if I ever decided to “come out.” Little did I know that Tulane is one of the most open and accepting college campuses in the nation, and no matter your religion, race, or sexual orientation, you will find support and be welcomed with open arms. The LGBTQ community is very prevalent on campus, and all the events focused around this group are popular with the entire student body. This is one reason why Tulane is so accepting--everyone gets involved, which spreads awareness of the LGBTQ community.

My favorite thing about Tulane is its perfect blend of learning. Tulane students not only learn by meticulously studying the pages of textbooks or labs, but also by exploring the amazing city it’s surrounded by. At what other school can you at one minute be eating blackened-redfish with corn maque choux, or chasing a Mardi Gras float to get those special beads, while at another applying early to Tulane’s own medical school or 4+1 programs? I’ve learned so much and I’ve had a blast doing it, and I can’t wait to see what Tulane is going to do over the next two years.

Hopefully I’ll see y’all at orientation this summer--don’t be afraid to say hey!

Name: Corinne Watson
Major: Spanish & Public Health
Year: Junior
Email: cwatson9@tulane.edu

What’s up y’all?! My name is Corinne Watson and I’m a raging homosexual. I’m a junior from outside Philadelphia and am ecstatic to live in New Orleans. I get lost in all the totally different people and things to do and stuff to learn about! Coming to college is basically a whole new world *cue Aladdin swooping in*, so it can be hard to balance out “adult” stuff with fun. I really believe Tulane is the place to do it! When I came to college, I wasn’t so much worried about constantly coming out (I guess something about me just radiates gay…), as I was about my roommate being cool with it – and she was! We checked that convo off the list the very first night of college and since then, it’s been nothing but blue skies and rainbows.

The queer community here is incredible – it’s helped me really find myself. I’ve never had this kind of support before and, as a result, have grown quite the network of homies! I really appreciate our ability to talk about real stuff (social injustice, Donald Trump, etc) or just lounge around. I’ve learned so much since high school and have grown even more as a person. This journey all started at the Multicultural Leadership Retreat, put on every fall by the O. Once I started becoming aware of different issues/privileges through my classes, the O, and my peers, I became more respectful and a better person. I think college is all about growing your world and Tulane has definitely facilitated that. I love who I’ve become with the support of Tulane and the genuine love of New Orleans. I couldn’t imagine myself anywhere else and truly don’t think I could be happier!
