Welcome, Class of 2018!

Dillon, a member of the class of 2018, sent us this killer cap.
Today is day one of session two of New Student Orientation! Our 2018's are arriving on campus in droves to get registered for classes, get acclimated with campus and most importantly, meet each other and find out what these people who they have been Facebook friends with all spring are actually like in real life. Ah yes, the inevitable "I follow you on Insta, nice to meet you in real life (or do I tell them that I follow them, is that weird?"). Don't worry, it only gets more awkward. You can follow #TUNSO14 to see what's going down at orientation here.

As we have now had a full month since the May 1st deposit deadline, we have a pretty solid grasp on what the class of 2018 will look like. I have to tell you- we are so excited about this incoming class! It was one of our most competitive years for admission at Tulane. We admitted roughly 26% of students who applied.

Let's check out the class of 2018, by the numbers:

1604: Estimated number of students in the class of 2018, come move-in day.

61%: Female percentage of the incoming class. This is pretty consistent with the national trend that most colleges are seeing.

297: Members of the class of 2018 who are students of color.

57.55%: Percentage of the incoming class who will graduate in the top 10% of their high school class.

1344: Average two-section SAT score for the class of 2018. This is the highest average score Tulane has seen. With the new SAT heading back to a 1600-point scale, we will be starting to report our scores on this new (or old?) scale.

5: States with more than 100 students represented. The top five are New York (241), Louisiana (201), California (198), New Jersey (125), Illinois (107). The rest of the top ten states are rounded out by Texas, Massachusetts, Maryland, Florida and Pennsylvania.

46: States represented in the class of 2018. Only Hawaii, North Dakota, West Virginia and Wyoming are missing. We do have one freshman coming from Hawaii, but his country of residence is China. We have two coming from Alaska!

930: Estimated average number of miles a member of the class of 2018 will travel to attend Tulane from their hometowns.

18: Foreign countries represented in the class of 2018. Students will hail from Nicaragua, Panama, China, Canada, Vietnam, Spain, Costa Rica, Turkey, Colombia, Zimbabwe, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, India, Honduras, Germany, United Kingdom, and Ethiopia.

13: Most amount of students coming from a single high school. We have thirteen from both Highland Park HS (IL) and from Ben Franklin HS (here in NOLA). The next top high schools have twelve students from Jesuit (NOLA), eleven from Roslyn (NY), eleven from New Trier (IL), and ten each from Churchill (MD), Staples (CT), Lusher (NOLA).

So there you have it! Want to see some shots of the 2018 prepping for this fall? Check out our the album we just posted here. Some shots below, too!
