Maple definitely has a very college-town feel to it. You'll always see students, professors and Tulane/Loyola staff members walking and dining on this street. From campus, just walk down Broadway Street (where most of our Greek and religious houses are) and hang a right once you hit Maple. In just a few blocks, you'll start to see a bustling commercial corridor filled with all kinds of stuff. Lots of coffee shops (the closest Starbucks is here, but don't forget to check out our local joints- PJs Coffee and CCs Coffee, both on Maple) and places to sit outside to eat and study.
Here are a few of my can't miss spots to check out on Maple. If you are ever visiting Tulane or New Orleans, be sure to stroll over to this cute little Main Street-esque street just off campus. Its definitely our most popular walkable spot.
Bruno's- The ultimate Tulane sports bar. This place gets really hoppin' during big sporting events. Saints games get big here, and if (when! I mean when!) Tulane has a great football season, this is the place to watch the games. They also have great food and some fun bar games- pool tables and my favorite, table shuffle board. This place has been the official sports bar of Tulane since it opened 1934. I think the boys from my fraternity spent nearly every Sunday here senior year.
Mmmm... Satsuma |
Babylon Cafe- This was my go to spot in college to head over for a quick lunch. Arguably the best gyros and hummus in the city. Plus, if you need to do laundry, its attached to a laundromat where you can eat while you dry your clothing! This place is affordable and delicious.
Phillips- A very popular place for third and fourth year Tulane students and graduate students, Philips caters to a slightly more upscale crowd than the standard hole-in-the-wall college bars. They have some great specialty drinks, a classy ambiance and a very popular gay night on Fridays. The bar is beautiful and a great alternative to heading downtown for a more clubbish feel.
Favori- Ah, breakfasts at Favori. This spot is a staple for any student living in the neighborhood. Great, quick and cheap breakfast sandwiches. It's the perfect spot for Tulane students to dine on a tight budget, and they deliver.
Maple Street Book Store- This is one of the oldest and longest running independent book stores out there, and is about as quintessential as you can get when it comes to those cute, local bookstores. Come in an browse, chat with the owners and buy a book or two. It's the perfect shop to feel what life was like before anyone had ever heard of a Kindle.
The ever-popular Campus Connection, right at the intersection of Maple and Broadway |
There are a number of other great spots worth checking out on Maple (Maple Street Cafe- the crawfish and feta pita is phenomenal and Maple Street Patisserie has some killer croissants) but you'll have to head over and check this place out for yourself. There is some great shopping on Maple too, especially for you ladies, sushi joints and a number of other great restaurants. We are lucky to have this great street with a real college town feel to it just a few block off campus. Swing by and check it out.
