The Big Game in the Big Easy

Wow. What a week! I can honestly say that hosting Super Bowl XLVII here in New Orleans has been one of the most enjoyable experiences I've gotten to be a part of. The city was on display for the whole world to see. As you may have seen in the New Wave, I spent the last week as a volunteer with the New Orleans Superbowl Host committee, which was a pretty amazing experience. I was able to attend the FAM meeting last year, which I previously blogged about, and this past week got to attend Media Day, the NFL Experience and also spent a whole night manning the Super Bowl's Twitter account. I also love a good party, and MAN was this a weekend of parties. At one point, with all the celebrities and events going on, it almost seemed like the actual game was an afterthought.

Our students got really involved in the game as well, in a number of various aspects. Many were volunteers at various events, some got to be extras in the halftime show (and one, my girl Brianna, got to dance in the halftime show alongside Beyonce- yeah that's her in the photo!), others attended various parties and everyone got to take in all the excitement that was bursting at the seems of NOLA all week. We also had a number of great Super Bowl related events on campus as well- from Rich Eisen's talk to Mike and Mike broadcasting on campus to the cast of The League doing their stand up, it was a great week here at Tulane.

Speaking of excitement, one of the greatest aspects of this whole event being here was the ability for New Orleans to show once and for all that we are truly "back." So there was a small, um, glitch in the power, but aside from that, New Orleans pulled off this event with flying colors. Speaking of that power loss, I loved this take that NPR had on the surge. Let's be honest, the game was looking like a blowout, and that power loss shifted the momentum and made the second half a true nail biter. In fact, it ended up being the most watched game in Super Bowl history. Some even called it the "best Super Bowl Ever."  But blackout aside, the Ravens may have won the game, but in the end, the city of New Orleans was the true winner. I posted a collection of the best NOLA-related XLVII articles here, but I also did a little post on my Facebook wall that ended up going viral (almost 500 shares, look at dat!) that expressed my sentiments about the Big Game in the big easy. I am re posting the letter I wrote last week here, along with the photo that I posted along with it:

"World-
The Big Game in the Big Easy is finally here. I have been trying to get all my thoughts on what this really means for our city for months now. It's hard because, as clichéd as it sounds, regardless of who wins the game Sunday, the city of New Orleans really is the biggest victor of them all. I know that seems to trite to say, but let me put it this way- a few months after Katrina hit in 2005, I put that famous Chris Rose quote up on my Facebook page and it still remains today. "The only thing worse than being in New Orleans as it struggles to regain its footing would be... not being in New Orleans"
Well, we are here. And we are back. In all these news stories published about New Orleans during Super Bowl week, you'll read a lot about how this is the last page in our recovery. My main man Mitch Landrieu said today that "the story is much, much bigger than the Super Bowl. This is a story about the resurrection and redemption of a great American city." It's small things- bike lanes and repaved streets and new trees. It's big things- it's new airports, convention centers, streetcar lines and Superdomes. Most importantly, this recovery was fueled by the people of New Orleans, who truly are prouder than ever to call it home.

So as you turn on your TVs this weekend, world, you'll see two great teams battling it out. But you're also going to see something amazing. Our city, New Orleans... reborn. We hope you enjoy the show."

Now, to wrap up this post, I bring you: Jeff's Super Bowl XLVII Photo Extravaganza!

Here is me at the NFL Experience. I was in charge of the field goal kick and spent all day helping fans kick like the pros. I use the term "kick like the pros" verrrry loosely.

Here's the scene from the Rolling Stone party. That is Flo Rida on stage. I didn't really think I knew many Flo Rida songs until he started performing and I realized I knew every single word to every song. Go figure.
Here's me at Media Day in the Super Dome

The inside of the Media Center at the Convention Center. My volunteer credentials gave me access to all kinds of cool stuff. This was where all kinds of radio and TV stations broadcast from, as well as where many of the press conferences took place.

XLVII!

Backstage at Media Day

Here is command central for all things Social Media at the Super Bowl. We replied to all SB-related Tweets and monitored all kinds of social media activity here.

Comparing the social media trends of the two teams

When I say celebrities were everywhere, I mean it. Here's Sofia Vergara getting really exited as Pitbull took the stage at the Rolling Stone party (fun fact- Sofia's husband went to Tulane!). I got to see Paul McCartney, Aaron Rogers, Keyshawn Johnson, Hayden Panettiere, David Arquette, Mark Cuban, Sean Payton and the now famous Katherine Webb, among others.

Super Bowl barge on the Mississippi

CBS took over the city with some incredible sets. Here is the entrance to Super Bowl Park, which they built right in the middle of Jackson Square. It was all made by the Solomon Group, a local company too, which I love.

One of the best parties I got to attend was the DirecTV party. This was one amazing event- it featured Justin Timberlake's first concert in over 5 years. The roof almost blew off when he brought out Timbaland and then Jay Z.
I mean. This guy killed it.

A lot of people liked JT

I also got to attend the owners party featuring Rebirth Brass Band and Trombone Shorty.

Another shot from the owners party in City Park. Man, that Tom Benson sure can throw a party!

There you have it, folks! Here's to hoping that our little light flop doesn't deter the NFL from granting us another Super Bowl. I truly don't think it will, as way worse things can happen and in the grand scheme of things. and as we showed last we, we definitely are the perfect town for the Big Game. See you all again in 2018!
