#TravelSeason

Standard airplane view for me during travel season
Readers! I must profusely apologize. Nearly three weeks and no postings from me. If you are at all familiar with the world of college admission, you know why I've been so busy: TRAVEL SEASON. In the world of college admission, there are four seasons; they somewhat mirror the traditional seasons of the year. We have: Travel Season (Fall) Reading Season (Winter) Yield Season (Spring) and Summer (um, Summer). Most of those are pretty self explanatory- in reading season, we are hunkering down and meeting with committees to review your applications; in yield season we are traveling a bit and hosting numerous programs to "yield" our admitted students; and summer is a time to regroup, review and plan for the upcoming year. And travel season... well that is when we travel. A lot. A lot lot. In fact, since September 17th, I have slept in my own bed twice! So, what goes on during these long stints "on the road"? A few things...

1) High School Visits- For you high school students, you'll see a few college reps come to your school for a brief, 30-minute presentation during 3rd period, for example. What you may not realize is that admission representatives give those presentations to literally thousands of schools each year. Tulane representatives visited over 900 high schools last fall, and will do even more this travel season. I personally will visit 82 high schools. I just returned from two trips- a 2 week trip to Los Angeles and a 2 week trip in South Florida. Next week, I'll be visiting schools in San Diego and Orange County.

2) College Fairs- Check with your college counselor to find if there is a college fair near you, or look into attending a NACAC fair. College fairs are a great time for high school sophomores and juniors to get some initial basic questions answered and start to create and formulate a list of schools you are applying to. It's a good time for seniors to get some face time with your admission reps from the specific group of schools you'll be applying to. I just attended eleven college fairs in South Florida over the last few weeks- that's a lot of questions about pre-med and internships! It can be tiring sometimes, but if you have ever met me at a college fair before, you know that I am pretty much always excited to talk about everything that Tulane and NOLA has to offer.

3) Tulane Comes to You- Most universities will host information sessions at hotels or high schools in the evening for students and parents interested in their school. I have hosted three so far this fall, and have two more coming up (in San Diego or Orange County? I'm coming for you next week!) We bring Tulane students with us so you will get a chance to ask some questions of our current students, as well as alumni.

4) Interviews- Tulane actually does not offer interviews as a part of the admission office. If you are ever down on campus, you are welcome to set up an informational informal meeting with your counselor, but Tulane does not have an interview process. Some schools do, so you may want to check in with some of the various schools you are interested in to see what their policy is.

Travel season can be quite exhausting for folks on the admission side of things- we are away from our friends, families and hometowns for months on end in the fall. But we do it because we love our schools and love getting the good word out there about the institutions we represent. Tulane in particular is a big school on "demonstrating interest," as in we want to admit students who we know are interested. Meeting a rep at your high school, college fair or admission event is doing exactly that: demonstrating your interest!

So if you have a chance, come meet your admission counselor from Tulane, or whichever schools you may be applying to. I look forward to travel season every fall, even if it means it's the 600th time I have had to talk about pre-med or I may have just spent a few minutes trying to enter the room number of the hotel that I had in my previous city, or I may be staying in my 6th hotel in 6 nights- I love Tulane and NOLA and enjoy the season that gives me a chance to expose you all to all the great things we offer here. Travel season is always an adventure too. Especially for me- I always seem to have some ridiculous  hysterical  and absurd things happen to me when I am on the road. Ask me about these stories sometime. And enjoy these photos- a little sneak peak behind the scenes of what goes on from our perspective during travel season.

Hope to see you soon! After a 5 Hour Energy, of course. Feel free to bring me one at my next visit to your high school.

One great thing about many college fairs is the food. Here is the (what seems like a quarter-mile long) buffet line at the Benjamin School in FL. Those are some dedicated PTA moms!

Here is my man Obi, the admission rep from the University of Colorado.
We all get pretty close with each other on the road.

During travel season, we spent a lot of time in our cars. And sit in traffic a lot too. Especially in South Florida, where I think I got caught behind every drawbridge in the state!

Here's a college fair!

And another one!
Oh, and another one!

One great thing about traveling on the road is that all of us admission representatives are good friends. We see each other a few times a year and are all doing the same stuff on the road. Here are my good friends Dereck (from George Mason University) Erin (from Mercer University) and Anita (from Elon).
Props to the University School of NSU in Ft. Lauderdale for the best breakfast award!
These crepes were amazing. I had three.

Sometimes its roosters that cross the road, but sometimes its Peacocks like at the Palmer Trinity School in Miami.

In addition to a lot of time spent in cars, we spend a lot of time in airplanes! Here is a shot  I snuck while taking off from Los Angeles a few weeks ago.

The group at Palisades Carter school in Los Angeles was so big that we had to head outside
for the informational session! The perks of recruiting students in California.

Then when you get back from 3 weeks away your mailbox is overflowing with mail! Welcome home!
