ANIMAL LANGUAGES

Will we ever be able to communicate with our friends—hold that—our kinfolk, the animals? It seems highly unlikely, but that does not mean that they don’t have some sort of language among their own kind. Meanwhile it is of interest to note our attempts to capture their language in our language, if for no other reason out of respect for their individuality.

It is clearly difficult to reproduce those animal sounds, which strike different nationalities differently. That may not be surprising; what is surprising is how peculiar some nations’ perceptions are, but also how many similarities there exist after all.

One of my professors once spent some time eliciting and examining these renderings from his students, and covering the blackboard with them. I can’t go that far, but do wish to speculate about those that I do know, the degree of plausibility attesting to different degrees of sensitivity to language of any kind from nation to nation. And that is a matter of indisputable interest.

Animal sounds can be rendered as a verb or a noun, or a mere exclamation, as in the Anglo-American version of a pig’s alleged oink-oink. This seems to me particularly misguided, its persistence a proof of, dare I say it, pigheadedness. No pig would be caught dead saying oink, an arbitrary coinage by tone-deaf observers.

What do pigs (highly intelligent animals, by the way) really sound like? Germans hear it as “quieken” or “quieksen,” which may be apt, although it makes a creature built like an Italian tenor sound like a soprano. I prefer the Hungarian verb, “roffogni,” with its masculine roughness, although based on an admittedly unscientific assumption, even if I did once, as a boy, briefly enjoy a piglet as pet. I am ultimately partial to the Russian version, which is “hryu-hryu,” with the vowel sound as in foot, not boot.

Almost unique agreement, or near-agreement, prevails about the cat sound: meow to us, “miau” in German, and “miaou” the Franch noun, although French also has the more Racinian—or is it Molieresque?--sounding verb form “miauler.” Italian offers the noun “miagolo” and the verb “miagolare,” which gives the sound a Tuscan, not to say Dantesque, quality.

Serbian, if I recollect correctly, calls it “mrnjao,” with the j pronounced as our y. (More about that r anon.) Only Hungarian wants to be different with its verb “nyavogni,” although a remote resemblance remains. What matters, however, is the universal similarity, attesting to our close attention to this beloved pet. Of interest too is the earlier English rendering of the cat verb as “mew,” from the Middle English “meuen,” as in Hamlet’s “The cat will mew.”

There is no such agreement about the other cat sound, which English renders not unpersuasively as purr. Here the French too does nicely with the verb “ronronner,”  the repeated “ron” syllable conveying the monotony of the purr. Notable is the presence of the apt r-sound, also in the German “schnurren,” although that “sch” is clearly more Teutonic than feline.

Interestingly, there is no such near-unanimity when it comes to our other domestic pet, the dog, onomatopoetically the bowwow. What there is, however, in most languages is the plosive b, as in bark, “bellen “ (German), and “aboyer,” (French). But not so in the Serbian “lajati” or the Hungarian “ugatni,” which strike me as off target. Here too the Spanish departs, what with the verb “ladrar” and the noun “ladrido.” Only the two a’s in the verb seem moderately apt.

Moving out of the house into the yard, we find some correspondences again. Thus the rooster’s crowing is “krahen” in German; the French roosters actually sing, “chantent,” with a droll lyric, “cocorico,” which becomes in German “kukuriku,” and in English, rather too fancifully, cock-a-doodle-do. There is also some agreement about the donkey’s braying, heehaw in English, “ia” (pronounced ee-ah) in German.

Regardless of differences, though, it is nice that there are words in all these languages for animal sounds. This is not so obvious when you consider that every language has certain words for which there are no equivalents in other ones.

Take the verb frown, for which you would expect every major language to have  its one-word term. Not so. In both French and German it takes three words to convey that, translatable literally as wrinkle the brow. Can anything be concluded from such a phenomenon—say, that frowning comes more readily, more naturally to English speakers? I rather doubt it. Well, maybe to the British, but not to us happy Americans.

What it seems to mean is that different nations have latched on to different things to focus their atention on and coin a word for. Indeed there are words for which there is not even a three-word equivalent. I think of the wonderful Hungarian term for an irresistible melody, “fulbemaszo,” literally crawling into the ear, four words.

Or what about the German “zum knochenkotzen,” something not just vomitory, but so awful it makes you vomit solid bones? Or take a word that is so germane to a language, so perfect in it, that another language just takes it over as is. Thus the French “gaffe” and “faux pas,” both of which synonyms have become adopted by English, which did not have their equivalent, though misstep would do. Yet it was appropriate to go for those French words, French people being such an elegant, formal, ceremonious sort, as to be especially sensitive to breaches of good behavior.

Amusingly, sometimes a borrowing from another language results in a mistake. Thus the Hungarian took over “smoking” from the British, thinking misguidedly that it meant tuxedo, or what we prefer to call dinner jacket. It also took over, with the correct meaning, the dish called ham and eggs, but turned it into “hemendeks.” Similarly, it adopted football (i.e., soccer) with the Magyarization “futbal,” informally “ foci.” Serbian came up with “fudbal,” while German made it truly Germanic as “Fussball.”

But let us get back to animals. Here the letter r tends to sound especially ferocious, hence the roar of the lion becomes a “rugissement” in French. But the English is not that specific: roars can come from all kinds of nonleonine sources  And the German verb, “brullen” is a sound emitted by an unhappy infant as readily as by a lion’s maw.

Now for something very curious. While other German songbirds sing, “singen,” the nightingales do something else, “schlagen.” But that verb primarily means to beat, yet why on earth would that delicate, most musical song of the nightingale be a beating? Nightingale, by the way, is a comely word, as is the German “Nachtigall,” similarly based on the fact that nightingales sing at night. Some parallel obtains in Romance languages, too, where the French nightingale is a “rossignol,” and the Spanish one a “ruisenor,” with a tilda on the n, which may subsume “ruido” (sound) and “senor” (gentleman) implying that this bird and its sound are aristocratic.

English has two very good, onomatopoetic words for bird language: chirp and twitter, the latter even better in German: “zwietschen.”  And the horned owl, in German, is the “Uhu,” a real hoot. But other owls, in any language I can think of, have no onomatopoetic names, unless you make something of the “ou” in the French “hibou.”

Most birds in many languages simply cry, which is very human of them. I can think, however, of one amusing divergence, what the thrush does in Hungarian: he whistles: “fucsul,” with umlauts on both u’s. That conveys a whistle sovereignly, but does a thrush really whistle? In Hungarian, he apparently does, and so does the canary, for which the term surely fits.

Topic 81: Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Technology has made the world a better place to live.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Technology has made the world a
better place to live. Use specific reasons and examples to support your opinion.

Sample essay 1.

These are several viewpoints on the implications of technological change and advancement and
such schools of thought which considerably vary have their respective validity. Technological
change has its advantages and disadvantages. For one, it is true that it partly solves problems and
makes life better. At the same time, technological changes may likely create new problems
thereby threatening or damaging quality of life. In the developing economies, for instance,
technological advantages has both its merits and demerits. The introduction and seeming
acceptability and usefulness of computers have somehow helped increase the efficiency of several
firms. It is not only in the industrial sector that technological change proven to be very effective.
In the agricultural sector, for example, the introduction of new technologies in increasing
production has been very effective in expanding agricultural produce. These are just a few
examples to illustrate the advantages of technological advancement.

On the other hand, countries should be more careful on their choice of technology since it must be
noted that while certain types of technology are adaptable to developed economies the same type
of technology may not fit the environment of developing countries due to differing economic,
social, cultural, and political factors. For example, infrastructure improvements such as a
construction of irrigation dam in the mountains of the Philippines where several natives reside
may likely be resisted by the population due to cultural factors. They may prefer not to have such
improvements in view of traditional values. Another example is the pollution impact of some
technological improvements particularly in the industrial sectors.

The choice and adaptability of new technology should therefore be carefully studied. The short,
medium, and long term impact of such technology is very important particularly for developing
economies. The benefits should always be greater than the costs.

I am inclined to support both positions because both views have their own validity. However, I am
more convinced that technological advancement is beneficial to countries so long as they are
aware of the disadvantages of such technology.

Sample essay 2.

Nowadays,we are in an age of technological revolutions. Many conveniences have been brought
to us by technology and science. I agree with the statement that technology has made the world a
better place to live. The reasons and examples are chiefly as follows:

The developments of compudters and internet have improved our life styles dramatically.
Computers have changed our traditional ways of reading and writing, which bring us great
convenience. The combanation of computers and internet has made our living quite different from
before. Elecotronic mail is a useful example: computer users can communicate with one another
across the globe. Electronic mail is particularly beneficial for language students. Learners can
enjoy language exchange with native speakers through electronic mail.

Another good example is the invention of automobiles. Actually automobiles have been an
integral part of every industrial economy. Many people use an automobile to get to work, many
others - trademan, salesman, taxi drivers, police men - use automobiles as part of their work. On a
larger scale, car production is possibly the most important element of national industrial
performance. All in all, it is incrediable to imagine a mordern world will be like without
anutomobiles.

Likewise, international jet transport has had some revolutioanry effects on our lifestyles.
Beacause the high speed and relatively low costs of this type of travel, it has changed the way
people look at the world. Today the world is much smaller than it was in the past.

Adimittedly, technological advances also caused so unpleasant effects such as pollution of
automobile exhaust fumes, and noise of transport vechiels. But as people have realized those
problems and are trying to find ways to solve them, on the whole, I believe thatn thechnology has
made the world a better place to live.

 Sample essay 3.

Standing at the turn of the new century, we observe the twentieth century as a great advance in
technology. With those advances, human lives have changed dramatically. In some ways, life is
worse, but mostly, it is better. So personaly speaking, I am, and probably will always be, one of
those who agree with the idea that technology has made the world a better place to live.

First of all, technology has brought with it a more comfortable life. Not only do we use
aircondition and heating system during the summer and winter, but also do we take many changes
in food preparation methods to make so delicious food. Due to the development of architecture
and so on, living conditions are greatly improved nowadays.

Besides, the world is now more convenient to live. We can travel around by aeroplane and
railway network. We can talk to each other faraway by telephone. Several score years ago, it was
even daydreaming that we could today obtain information as well as commodities via Internet.

The last but not the least, through the process of technology improvement, people begin to realize
the fact that only reconciling with the nature can we keep a continuous development. That is why
we today pay so much attention to environmental protection. Many factories have achieved
economic growth without pollution under certain new technology. These cities are beginning to be
very beautiful places to live in.

Instances of the same sort can be multiplied indefinitely. When taking into account all these
merits we may safely arrive at the conclusion that advantages of technology outweigh any
disadvantage it may bring to our lives. Though I must admit that people sometimes invent some
things that threaten the lives of themselves, no one can ignore the additional convenience and
satisfaction offered by technology, and just with such experience the human being forge ahead
swiftly to the future.

Sample essay 4.

With the development of technology, there have been a lot of changes to our life. Admittedly,
some of these changes are bad, causing many environmental and social problems. However, most
of these changes contribute to making our life more convenient, more comfortable and more
wonderful.

First of all, due to the improvement of technology, people can enjoy more convenience than ever.
For example, it only takes travelers or businessmen several hours to go to other countries by jet
plane, which makes the world seem to be much smaller. With the help of Internet, people at
different corners of the world can communicate with significantly high speed and low cost. It is
technology that has cleared away the barriers that once prevented people from leading a
convenient life.

Secondly, technology has made our life as comfortable as we can imagine. Sitting in airconditioned
rooms, people do not have to suffer the extremely cold or hot weather any more.
Whatever vegetable or fruit we want to eat, we can always find it in a supermarket without
worrying about the season. We can also go to work in a place far away from our homes by using
automobiles or public transportation tools.

In addition, technology provides us many choices to spend our spare time. Listening to music by
using an MD, MP3 or walkman, surfing the internet or watching digital movies, all of these
entertainments make our life wonderful. In conclusion, although technology has brought about
some problems, such as air pollution caused by increasing automobiles, ethnic problems caused by
cloning human beings, the benefits of technology far outweigh its bad influences. So it is safe to
say that technology has made the world a better place to live.

Sample essay 5.

Whether technology has made the world a better place to live is a prevalent topic undergoing
serioius debate. After pondering it from several aspects, I totally agree it is true that technology
has made the world a better place to live. This I support with the following reasons

As we know, firstly technology can help people to live a longer life. A small example can give
some light to this point. At the stone age, our ancestors’ average age is about 25. Due to the
development of medical technology, now people’s average age is two or three times of that time.

Another reason why I prefer to this choice lies in the fact that technology ameliorate the
environment in which people living in. for example, thousand of yeas ago people lived in caves,
which are cold in winter and hot in summer. With using Architectural technology, people build up
houses, skyscrapers. Living in them, people enjoy the comfortable lives without worrying about
the whether it is hot, cold or rainy outside.

Finally I want to mention that technology has bring our lives more and more convenience. For
instance, many people like music, classic music or pop music. At the beginning, people must go to
the theater whenever he wanted to hear a song..Today, by using great technologies, walkman and
discman are supplied for the music fans. Then they can enjoy their favorite songs anywhere and
anytime.

From what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that technology has
made the world a better place to live.

Topic 80: Describe a custom from your country that you would like people from other countries to adopt.

Describe a custom from your country that you would like people from other countries to adopt.
Explain your choice, using specific reasons and examples.

Sample essay.

The answer to this question depends on your own experience and the country you were brought
up. In my point view, the most important custom from my country that I would like people from
other countries to adopt is filial piety.

According to Chinese tradition, filial piety is the primary duty of all Chinese. Being a filial son
means show respect to one's parents during their lifetime and--as they grew older--taking the best
possible care of them.

A story can best illustrate the concept of filial pity. During the Chin Dynasty (4th-5th Century
CE), a boy named Wu Meng was already serving his parents in exemplary filial piety although he
was just eight years old. The family was so poor that they could not even afford a gauze net
against the mosquitoes. Therefore every night in the summer swarms of mosquitoes would come
and bite them. Wu Meng let them all feast on his naked stomach. Even though there were so
many, he did not drive them away. He feared that the mosquitoes, having left him, would instead
bite his parents. His heart was truly filled with love for his parents.

Filial piety is a good virtual of Chinese people, and people from other countries should also learn
from it. Parents gave us birth and nurtured us, therefore we have the obligation to respect them
and to take care of them when they can no longer take care of themselves. Western countries
have complete social welfare systems to support people financially after they retire, but older
people often face loneliness; they long for somebody to talk to them, especially their children and
grand-children. We should try our best to spend more time with them, talk to them, and take them
to family gatherings and trips to the nature.

Filial piety can benefit our society. It can make our family tie stronger, and children can learn a lot
from our attitude to our parents and from their grand parents. They can realize how important a
family is to a person, and develop a strong sense of responsibility to their families and friends. For
example, when it is necessary to stand out to defend our families and even the nation for danger,
we will not hesitate to do so, because we know how important our families and our country is to
us.

In short, the most important custom from my country that I would like people from other
countries to adopt is to be good to their parents. It is not only ensure that our parents can be taken
good care of when they are getting old, but also help our children to develop good virtues and
spirits.

Topic 79. Your city has decided to build a statue or monument to honor a famous person in your country. Who would you choose?

Your city has decided to build a statue or monument to honor a famous person in your country.
Who would you choose? Use reasons and specific examples to support your choice.

Sample topic.

The answer to this question depends on your own experience and life style. In my point view, if
we should build a statue or monument to honor someone important to our city, this person is no
one else but people in our city. Among countless factors which influence the choice, these are
three conspicuous aspects as follows.

The main reason for my propensity for building a monument for people is that people are the
greatest resources of our city. (……)

Another reason can be seen by every person is that people are productive forces. (……)

Furthermore, many works in the city can never fully be automated by computers and machines.
Although we can use the latest technologies, we never forget that there is no substitute for human
skill and creativity.

In short, the most important and honorable person in this city is not a single person, it is the
people. People are heroes. For our city to survive and thrive, it is essential that the city update its
approach to managing its most important asset - the people.

Alumni Spotlight V- The Industry!

Its Nell!
It's pretty much every week these days that you read about another major development here in Hollywood South. If you don't follow the entertainment industry here, you would be surprised to learn that outside of California, Louisiana is frequently ranked as the second most popular state to film in. Last week it was announced that Jurassic World, the sequel to Jurassic Park, will shoot in NOLA this summer. This week, American Horror Story announced they will return to NOLA for their 4th season. Big name productions like this join other announced features shooting or soon to be shooting in NOLA- everything from Terminator 5 to Will Ferrell's new comedy Get Hard to the new Fantastic 4 reboot. I've previously blogged about Hollywood South before, but so much has happened since then. We've got some big moves in Oscar running too- 12 Years a Slave, Dallas Buyers Club and The Butler all filmed in New Orleans.

It's no surprise then that industry fever has hit our graduates! It's not just film either- our graduates are hugely involved in the music/television/modeling/film industries locally here in NOLA and around the world. We've had events on campus dedicated to Hollywood and have a pretty robust group of successful alumni in the industry (everyone from the President of Universal Pictures to the creator of HBO's Entourage) We've even had a summer session specifically dedicated to the industry. Check that one out here. Not to mention our models...

So you're probably guessing the feature of today's edition of our Alumni Spotlight blog. (Check out our previous alumni posts- newsies, foodies, fashionistas, and start-uppers). Today, I take you on a tour of our recent graduates who have gotten their footing in the fast-paced, ever-changing and endlessly entertaining TV/modeling/movie/music entertainment industry! These are just a small sampling of my friends from recent years. This is big business at Tulane these days! Let's meet our stars...

Nell Rebowe - Neuroscience Major Business Minor - Fashion Model
Nell! Target!

You've probably seen Nell before in a magazine or in a commercial. She currently works as a fashion model represented by twelve agencies worldwide. Nell works on something new and different every day and consistently meets creative talents ranging from photographers, makeup artists, hair stylists, producers, stylists, clients, brands, creative directors, agents, or fellow models.  Nell loves meeting them; "All are artists coming from many walks of life, and many countries, and we work together as a team to build an image to support the client's vision for their product," she told me.

A neuroscience major turned model? Absolutely, "Tulane provides a great foundation for any career.  I modeled through school, but class always came first before a job. With my degree from Tulane, I have peace of mind that I have a degree from a renowned school. I have encountered fellow Tulanians throughout my travels, most recently, a French woman in finance at a dinner party in Paris and a television producer in L.A. for whom I auditioned.  The alumni base of my friends from Tulane works in an array of industries, and we find ourselves benefiting from learning about each other's work. I have found a huge network of support from my fellow alumni."  Beauty and brains. And her major? "I am so happy to have studied Neuroscience.  I see the sciences and the arts as having a great deal in common.  Neuroscience is an extremely creative area of study; new theories and developments make it a continually changing field.  There is no straight line or one answer to finding solutions. My job is similar in that there's no single right way to present an image. Teamwork, creativity, and willingness to push boundaries all contribute to success."

You can find Nell on Instagram @nellrebowe. You'll be able to check her out everywhere from Loreal, Elle, Glamour, and Target to Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, and Marie Claire.

Dan Miller- -English/Music major - Professional Musician

Dan jammin'
From movies to models to music, we really do have it all. You'll find numerous Tulane bands on campus and throughout the city and it goes without saying that NOLA is one of the best music cities in the world. One of my favorite musicians to come out of Tulane is Dan Miller, who I recruited a few years back. Since graduating in May 2012, he's toured the country several times over with a couple of different groups, and played at venues such as The Kennedy Center (DC), The Fox Theatre (Denver), and SouthBySouthwest (Austin).  Dan is a singer/songwriter that plays guitar and piano.  When he's not on the road, he teaches music at schools in the DC area. I asked him if Tulane helped him prepare for a life in the music industry. "Without a doubt.  The professors and peers I was surrounded by on my liberal arts path at the university helped to cultivate my creative pursuits by exposing me to a vast and challenging body of material that forced me to work beyond my strengths. The student body is close knit, and I was able to collaborate and perform with many talented friends I made on campus. Tulane is part of the beautiful fabric of a city that is full of inspiration and character. To be an artist in New Orleans, is to be constantly humbled by the true unsung talent that resides on every corner." Dan's band, Mission South, is one of the hottest bands in DC right now.

Sam Carlin - Political Science major - Freelance Music Coordinator - MTV Creative Music Integration / News & Docs

Sam and Snoop
Lets stick with the music industry for a bit and meet a fraternity brother of mine, Sam, who works on a team that manages all the music supervision for News & Docs programming at MTV. This means he is in charge of finding, choosing and licensing all of the music you hear in the background on many MTV shows including Catfish and True Life. Sam and his team choose everything from the instrumentals to vocal placements to theme songs. Sam is always trying to find new artists and bands to feature on our programming so there is a great deal of music discovery involved in the job as well. Not a bad gig- he is constantly going to concerts and checking out new bands to keep up with what's current and what will be the next big thing.

Sam told me that  "being at Tulane and living in New Orleans definitely helped feed my love of music. There is so much great live music to be seen all over New Orleans whether it be at a small bar like the Maple Leaf or at a huge festival like Jazz Fest or Voodoo Fest. Because New Orleans is such a musical city, many people I've worked with share my love of New Orleans so its a great thing I've been able to bond over with colleagues."

Maura Cusick - Film Studies major - Staff Assistant, Wardrobe

Fresh out of Tulane, Maura is already all wardrobe all the time for some of the biggest name films and shows out there. She's worked on Dawn of Planet of the Apes, Refugio, American Horror Story, The X Factor, a Big Freedia music video and is currently under a nondisclosure agreement working on a huge name film. She started out at Tulane as a film studies major. And from there? "I thought the major would be interesting, but had no real idea if that was actually the direction I wanted to go in, or even where within film I would want to go," she told me.  "By the time I was a senior and my penchant for shopping had gone completely overboard, I realized my interest was really in clothes and costumes. I then took some costume construction courses in the Theater department, which gave me an essential basic understanding of how garments are made.  After graduation I decided to stay in New Orleans because I felt I would have a better shot of trying to break into the film industry here than if I moved to New York or LA, which turned out to be completely accurate. I got my first gig through working on the student film of a friend and classmate in my major. The first AD on her project put my name in for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and I've pretty much been working since then."

That's the great thing about the film industry here in NOLA. It's not all that hard to break into! So what does Maura do every day? "Basically in wardrobe I spend my days running whatever errands need to happen on set or just in our department. That includes bringing costumes from the office to the set, from the set to the tailor's house, picking up whatever supplies needed for the agers and dyers (the people who make the clothes look worn in or old), the set costumers (who make sure all actors look perfect before each take and continuity is kept through shooting)  etc,. In the costume dept, we buy a ton of options for each character in each scene for the designer to choose from. Then if they choose a particular look, we go about finding enough multiples of that outfit so the actor can change through the entirety of shooting. So if you see a 2 hour movie that takes place in a day and the hero is wearing a single outfit, that's actually probably 15 shirts. Every day is different and could entail entirely different tasks, which brings a nice variety to things."

ArinMichelle Weisner - Communication major (minors: Business & French) - Executive Assistant to CEO & Business Development Coordinator at CID Entertainment

ArinMichelle at Kenny Chesney
ArinMichelle has got a pretty cool job. CID Entertainment partners with some of the largest touring acts and entertainment events to produce VIP programs and provide travel packages and shuttle transportation to guests.  ArinMichelle works directly with her CEO and has recently been focused on business development. In the last two years she has had the opportunity to travel and work on music festivals and concert tours including Coachella, Stagecoach, Hangout, Jazz Fest, Lollapalooza, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church and more. I asked her if Tulane played a role in getting her to where she is today, having only been out of college for a year. "Tulane definitely helped me get on this path.  During my senior year I took an internship class for which I attended class once each week and interned at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation two days each week.  I was fortunate to build some great relationships and gain a lot of experience during this internship and the skills I learned propelled me into the music industry.  Also... let's be honest... who in the music industry doesn't love New Orleans?  New Orleans is a great city with a lot of opportunities in sports and music - and a great conversation piece during interviews." I couldn't agree more!

Courtney Millman - Psychology major, Sociology minor - Location Assistant at CBS

Like Louisiana, New York offers tax incentives to productions that film in the state.  Courtney, who graduated from Tulane this past year, got her start in film and TV production during the second semester of her senior year when she was offered an internship position at Second Line Stages in the Lower Garden District after her communications professor informed her about the studio.  During this internship, Courtney got a first hand look at what the world of production was like when Tarantino's Django: Unchained filmed at the stages. She told me after that, she was hooked.  What was next? "From this internship I was offered a job as an Office Production Assistant on another film (Empire State with Liam Hemsworth and Dwayne Johnson) that shot in New Orleans for a few months the summer after I graduated from Tulane.  The Location Assistant on Empire State happened to be friendly with the Location Manager of "Blue Bloods" which was crewing up for its third season as "Empire State" was wrapping.  Despite my lack of much experience in the business the guys on "Blue Bloods" decided to give me a shot."

"Blue Bloods" films all around New York City and Courtney's job is to prep any given location for a film shoot.  She told me that "this prep includes informing neighborhood residents and merchants about the upcoming shoot, working cooperatively with the NYPD and the Mayor's Office of Film and Television, organizing services for crew members such as restrooms nearby set or places to keep warm when we are filming outside in -15 degree weather during the recent Polar Vortex that hit most of the US.  My department acts as a liaison between the crew of about 100 people and the neighborhood that we turn into our world for the shoot day".  Sounds awesome!
On set at "Blue Bloods"

So there you have it, and that is just a sampling. What I found cool was how many of these industry-based alumni got their start in the field right here at Tulane. Can't get enough of the burgeoning industry here in NOLA? Check out our TruTU video on the subject here. And interested in any of these jobs you see above? Well come on down to Hollywood South, y'all!

Topic 78. Is it more important to be able to work with a group of people on a team or to work independently?

Is it more important to be able to work with a group of people on a team or to work
independently? Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

Sample essay 1.

In a modern society, employers always face the dilemma of whether to choose a person to work
with a group of people or to work independently. This problem is a much-debated one in that it
affects everybody in his or her daily lives. While both of the ways may have their advantages and
disadvantages, they can be applied under different circumstances. Afterwards, I will explain my
opinion about it.

To work independently has the obvious advantage that it can prove the ability of a employee. One
can use his own knowledge and way to solve the difficulties met during the work. But there lies
intrinsic harmful characteristic in this method. Some people warn that a person choosing to work
independently may lack the ability of communicating with other people. Furthermore, a person's
knowledge and ability are limited. We need others' help or assistance to solve the problems. By
means of it, we can improve the efficiency so that a company can make good use of human
resources.

On the other hand, choosing to work with a group of people also has advantages to some extent.
From most advertisements, we can notice that nowadays more and more companies concentrate
on communication skills and team-cooperated abilities. The reason is that they believe two heads
are always better than one's. With the combination of all people's knowledge, we can solve the
problem or bring out a better solution as soon as possible. In addition, to work with team also can
save the time and make more money for companies. As we know, it is a strong competitive
society. Time can means a lot to a company. To work with a team can reduce the time to the
lowest extend so that the company can increase their competition. Although to work with a team
does have its profound advantages, at the mean time there lies some drawbacks in it such as an
individual may rely on the others in a team.

But if all these factors are contemplated, the advantages of working with a group of people carry
more weight than those of working independently because the first one fits most companies better
in two ways: In the first place, we cannot live in a society independently and we need to
communicate with each other, so the communication skill is very important to us. Through
teamwork, we can enhance this ability. Secondly, through teamwork, we can try each one's best to
give a better idea to save time and make more profit for companies. Therefore from what we have
discussed, we may safely come to the conclusion that choosing to work with a group of people is a
rather wise decision.

Sample essay 2.

With the combination of all people's knowledges, we can solve the

Sample essay 3.

Some people like to work independently, while others would prefer to work in a team. Is it more
important to be able to work with a group of people on a team or to work independently?
Depending on different personal traits and working environments, people will have different
answer to this question. I think being able to work in a team is more important for me.

First, modern society and industry is a complicated system which requires team work,
communication and cooperation between companies and individuals. Take a computer system for
example, it comprises of hardware, operating system and software, which are manufactured
separately by different companies. Not one single company can accomplish a computer system
without using products and technologies from other companies. Similarly, in a company,
communication and teamwork is more and more important because I can not do my work properly
without interacting with my supervisor and my colleagues.

Second, there are many advantages of working in a group than working alone. Teamwork provides
me with a cooperative, friendly and enjoyable work environment. The team can also be helpful
with my questions and problems, therefore increase the efficiency of my work. Teamwork can
challenge my abilities and I can learn valuable experiences from it. From teamwork, I can also
made valuable contacts with other professionals, which is quite helpful to my future career.

Third, the ability of working independently does not contradict with the ability to work in a team.
For example, in a team environment, I enjoyed being a major contributor to my team. The fact
that others depended on my work made me feel like I was doing worthwhile things. For example, I
was in charge of the front end for the GUI for the new test manager. This was very valuable,
because I know how important working on a team is.

Inclusion, I think the most important quality for me in my work environment is the ability to work
with others in a team.

Stadiumania!

Tour time!
Man did I get a treat this week! The admission team got a personal tour of the progress over at Yulman Stadium. And let me tell you, this place is going to be amazing.

Coming off one of our best seasons in years, including a trip to the R & L Carriers Bowl, the Green Wave is going to be in for quite the treat when they play their first game at Yulman. Even more exciting is our stellar incoming class. Yesterday at National Signing Day, Coach Curtis Johnson called the class the "best he's seen his is three years at the school." We inked all 24 players and the buzz is pretty big.

And the only thing better than coming off a bowl appearance and netting a killer recruitment class? Coming home to our gorgeous, brand new, on-campus football stadium. The 30,000-seat, $73 million facility is still on track to be open this season for our home opener. I took my admission team over to the site for a formal tour given by Josh Beezley, Tulane's Construction Coordinator from our Capital Projects group. We got to see everything from the field all the way up to the top level plaza. I can assure you, this stadium spares no expense. Everything from a crazy cool on-field-level bunker suite to two massive party decks, this stadium is built to impress. I am most excited for the Glazer Family Club, named after Jill and Avi Glazer, two of the stadium's largest donors. The club takes up nearly half the field and will offer some killer views of the action. Also, you read that right before- two party decks. I guess technically they go the name of "club decks," but they will be the best spot to catch the game in an open and social environment.

The field itself will be called Benson Field, in honor of donor and owner of the Saints. The state of the art synthetic turf field will feature green and white checkerboard end zones and the turf will be similar to that used in the Superdome.

You can stay up-to-date with the stadium's progress by checking out their website and viewing their constitution cams. In the meantime, here are some shots I grabbed of Yulman during the tour. Stay tuned, Green Wave fans, this is going to be epic!

Coming soon- all kinds of food options

Josh is standing on the Bunker Suite, right on field level. It's right near the tunnel where the team will enter. Should be sweet! (no pun intended)
